Should I have badges at my event?
Many companies wonder if they should have badges at their events. Overwhelmingly, the answer is yes! Tradeshow badges help your event look professional and are particularly useful when your event has backstage access or security clearance. A colorful badge that stands out will attract more attendees and take your event to the next level.
What should be on an event badge?
What is on your event badge will depend heavily on the type of event you are hosting. Usually, this falls under two categories: badges for a business convention or tradeshow, and badges for a fun event.
BADGES FOR A BUSINESS CONVENTION OR TRADESHOW
Designing badges for a business convention is relatively straightforward. Most businesses choose to have the name, position, and ID number of the employee on their badge.
When paired with a fun design that reflects your brand, an event badge for a business convention or tradeshow is never a bad idea.
BADGES FOR A FUN EVENT
Badges for events like concerts, conventions, and trade shows make it easier to see who has access to a space, and who doesn’t. This can increase security by helping your team easily see who should and shouldn’t be there.
Also, providing a badge for fun events gives attendees a special memento that can elicit great memories of your event while boosting their desire to attend a future event.
How to design color tags for tradeshow badges:
The first step in making color tags for tradeshow badges is to come up with a design. Your design should reflect your company branding. To do this, incorporate the colors of your logo and the general atmosphere of your company’s image. You can choose to keep your design simple or go all out–it’s totally up to you!
If you are not sure where to start, there are many templates online that you can use or draw inspiration from. You can also look at event badges that other companies use to get a feel for what you like and don’t like.
Don’t overlook the details: Printing
Now that you have created your design it is important to identify which tag material will complete your vision of a great event badge. To select an ideal material one must consider the durability, topcoat appearance, price, and the printer. With many years in the printing industry, Mediajet’s staff encompasses the knowledge and experience to recommend key materials and features that will produce a great looking, high quality badge.
- Material
There are many different types of materials available to create tags for event badges. The material you choose must be compatible with the printer you will be using. To prepare for printing, these materials are die cut into almost any desired shape and dimension, often with the ability to fold for two sided printing, and with holes to support lanyards. Here are some examples of materials used for event badge tags:
- Matte Synthetic
- Matte Paper
- Gloss Synthetic
- Gloss Paper
- Direct Thermal
- Thermal Transfer
Choosing the right material can enhance your brand’s image that you want to convey to your attendees. For example, gloss paper or gloss synthetic material will generate a shiny, reflective surface. A lower luster, less reflective, natural appearance is achieved with matte paper or matte synthetic materials. When selecting the best material for your event tag you must consider the finished appearance, durability and price. Paper tags are less expensive and less sustainable than synthetic, and are commonly used for events lasting only one to two days. Synthetic tags, generally used for longer event periods, are crafted with a synthetic material that is tear, fade, heat and moisture resistant.
- Type of Printer
Your printer must be compatible with the tag material you choose. In other words, an inkjet printer uses inkjet material and a thermal transfer printer can only print on thermal transfer material. At Mediajet, we help you determine the most optimal tag material based on your printer, and work with you to find the most-effective printing method.
Don’t forget about the rest of the badge.
When choosing the construction of the rest of the badge, there are a few important things you should keep in mind!
- Orientation
One of the first things you should consider when it comes to the accessories of your color label is the orientation of the badge. The two most common orientations are landscape and portrait, and they’re the ones that work best for badges.
When deciding which orientation to choose, you should look at your design. Usually, there will be one orientation that looks better than the other!
- Protective Casing
Many badges are presented in a clear, plastic case or pouch with an opening to insert the tag. This is especially handy if you choose a less durable paper tag and need to use the badge for multiple days. The clear protective casing adds a level of durability to prevent wear and tear.
Protective casing is not necessary if you opt to use a more durable tag material such as synthetic. With resistive properties to tearing, scratching, moisture, and fading synthetic tags are often used for longer events lasting multiple days. These tags are often folded in half for double sided printing, and punched with holes for lanyard or clip attachment.
- Lanyard or Clip?
How will your attendees wear your event badge? Many companies choose to give out lanyards with badges for consistent visibility and hands free wear. However, clips can also be used to pin a badge to a lapel or a pocket. Both badge clips and lanyards come in many colors and styles; choose the one that fits your brand best!
